Anxious Patients

Here at Robinsons we recognise that most people are a little anxious when they have to have dental treatment and all our staff do their best to minimise the stress that patients can feel. However, we also understand that, for some patients, a little TLC is not enough and they need extra help in order to be able to cope with their treatment. We therefore offer conscious sedation to enable patients who are especially anxious to access dental care.

Since the law changed in the late 1990’s dentists no longer provide general anaesthetics and because of the risks associated with general anaesthesia only in the most extreme situations is it justified to ‘knock someone out’ for their dental treatment.

The conscious sedation which we provide involves an injection of drugs into the hand or arm which relax the patient and remove their anxiety allowing dental treatment to progress normally.

Because the drugs cause some degree of memory loss for a short time whilst the drugs are in the blood stream, the patient may think they were ‘knocked out’ for their treatment however this will not be the case as communication must be maintained at all times between the dental team and the patient.

Not all patients are suitable for sedation so assessment prior to any treatment appointments being made is essential.
