When they were first introduced white fillings were not considered as strong or long lasting as the old silver amalgam fillings. However, with more modern filling materials that is no longer the case and white fillings are now very strong and more natural looking.
In most situations we will replace old amalgam fillings with modern cosmetic white material when the filling needs replacing through decay or breakage.
