There
are many reasons why your dentist may decide you
should have an x-ray taken.
Mostly they
enable the dentist to see decay in areas which
are not visible during an examination, such as
underneath fillings or in-between teeth. As well
as decay in the teeth they may show areas of infection
or bone loss.
Your dentist
will normally take a full mouth screening x-ray
known as an OPG at your first visit.
This gives a good view of all your teeth and the
supporting jaw bones.
It may also
be necessary to take smaller, more detailed x-rays
of individual teeth depending on what your dentist
has seen during the examination of your mouth or
if the OPG highlights possible areas of concern.
Rest assured,
we only take x-rays which we consider necessary
to accurately make a diagnosis and provide treatment.
With modern techniques and equipment the dosage
of radiation used is very small and is not considered
harmful. |
